Vitamin C in the body
Vitamin C has many different functions in the body, many of which are related to its ability to reduce other substances (ie act as an antioxidant). It promotes the absorption of calcium and non-hemorrhoids (iron from vegetables and milk products), prevents oxidation of fatty acids and vitamin A and E, is essential for the absorption of vitamin B12 and folic acid, affects the synthesis of steroid hormones and the formation of bile salts from cholesterol and prevents the formation of nitrosamines. Tissues need vitamin C to form collagen, which depends, among other things, on the strength of blood vessels, bones, teeth, and all connective tissues.

Ascorbic acid has also been found to have beneficial effects in the treatment of cancer.

The deficiency causes serious scurvy that is not usually present in Finland. Mild symptoms of deficiency occur in people who eat too little or too unilaterally. The symptoms are non-specific such as reluctance, fatigue, weakness, breathlessness, and joint pain.

The need and intake of vitamin C

For example, citrus fruits are good sources of vitamin C.
Even very small amounts of up to 10 mg of vitamin C daily are enough to prevent deficiency symptoms. However, significantly higher amounts are recommended to achieve good health. The recommendation of the National Nutrition Advisory Board is 75 mg/day for adults and 20-40 mg/day for children, depending on age [5]. According to the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations, the maximum daily intake should be 1000 mg/day.
The average dietary intake of vitamin C is 118 mg/day in women and 98 mg/day in men. Yield is, on average, sufficient, but especially for some men, the intake could be better.

Camu Camu Fruit (Myrciaria dubia) is by far the most nutritious vitamin C, followed by rose hips, paprika, nettle, sea buckthorn, blackcurrant and asparagus, and kale. The most important sources of vitamin C in Finland are fruits, berries and vegetables, and potatoes.
